April 4: Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although the Church, with our nation, remembers Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 15, the date of his birth in 1929, this year many churches also commemorate the fortieth anniversary of his death on April 4, 1968. In your remembrance of Dr. King as Martyr and Renewer of Society, you may wish to pray this prayer:

Almighty God, who created us in your own image: Grant us grace fearlessly to contend against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and that we may reverently use our freedom, help us, like your servant Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to employ it in the maintenance of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of your name; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
